18th of September: Tasting & Lunch - El Enemigo: Argentina’s Iconic Winery

It all started in London. Following a dinner to celebrate Nicolás Catena becoming the 2009 Decanter Man of the Year, Adrianna and Alejandro decided to start a new project which will focus on producing high-altitude Cabernet Francs on the clayey and limestone soils of Lujan de Cuyo.
Alejandro has been Head Winemaker at Catena Zapata since 2002, while Adrianna (Nicolas Catena’s daughter) became a wine affectionado when enjoying top Bordeaux, including Ch Cheval Blanc, with her father. Because growing Cabernet Franc is atypical for the region, they named the winery ‘El Enemigo’ which means the enemy. Their efforts were rewarded with both the 2013 and 2019 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary receiving the perfect 100 points in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.
Each bottle they make has the following quote showing on the label: ‘At the end of the journey, we remember only one battle: the one we fought against ourselves, the original enemy, the one that defined us.’
Join us for an intimate journey through their wines with Adrianna, paired with a specially curated menu from our chefs.
"In the world of art, I think of one Titan who turns his own unimaginable sorrow and personal demons into utter beauty: Vincent van Gogh. Similarly, El Enemigo personifies the inner demons conquered in pursuit of excellence and turning pain into frankly exquisite drinking pleasure. Their wines are balanced, poised and with very reasonable alcohol levels too. Bravo to Adrianna Catena and Alejandro Vigil for not only challenging the status quo, but coming out the other side with such eloquence and majesty.”
– Tariq Khan, Private Sales Manager
The lunch will take place in our charming Garden Rooms at Petersham Nurseries. Tariq Khan, our Private Sales Manager and former sommelier at The Fat Duck, will guide you through the wines, served alongside a four-course meal curated by the Executive Chefs at Petersham Nurseries in Richmond.
