Tasting notes:

Pianrosso, a single vineyard, is an intense, generous and complex Brunello with hints or ripe red berry fruits enriched by spicy notes. Rich, layered and harmonious on the palate, the acidity and savouriness well-balance the juicy tannins.

Producer description:

Ciacci estate was bequeathed to Giuseppe Bianchini in 1985 and his now run by his children Paolo, winemaker, and Lucia. A former professional cyclist, Paolo run several charities for mental health and many other issues. His infectious laugh and will to get things done translate into his wines. The wines are sourced from organically farmed vineyards sitting at 240 to 360 meters. Here, the Sangiovese grapes thrive on schistic galestro clay soils and are well-ventilated and naturally protected from the diseases. The wines are fermented in a mix of temperature controlled stainless steel and glass concrete vats and aged for a long period in oak barrels.

The Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona 2017 Brunello di Montalcino Pianrosso shows nice balance and elegance, and it definitely shows the deft hand of the winemaking team in what was not an easy vintage by any stretch. This pretty wine delivers lots of fresh cherry and wild rose, with ferrous earthy, licorice and grilled herb; I also get bay leaf and rosemary sprig. Like the annata 2017 Brunello produced by this estate, the single-vineyard Brunello Pianrosso is distinguished by a sweet cherry note (plus a hefty 15% alcohol) that accompanies the wine from start to finish. Production is 37,000 bottles.

This is a beautifully crafted and polished Brunello for this vintage, with full body and creamy, lightly chewy tannins. Dark berries, walnuts and cedar with dried-flower undertones. Needs time to soften, but very pretty. Drink after 2024.
