Tasting notes:

Castelnuovo Berardenga benefits from a good sun exposure. This is a true experimental vineyard where the 36 biotypes of Sangiovese are planted located at 350m high on a plateau that benefit from a wide diurnal temperature range combined with a mix of chalk, clay and limestone soils. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (50% new). Extremely elegant, fresh with red berry aromas, extraordinarily complex and persistent with good tannic structure. A pure-bred Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. Food pairing: Spiced roast meats, stewed game, aged cheeses, mushrooms and truffles.

Producer description:

Fonterutoli is located near Siena on hills facing the Val d’Elsa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, Castello Fonterutoli promotes local varieties which express the identity of their land, while respecting nature and its diversity. The vineyards spread over 110 hectares divided on 144 single parcels with altitudes ranging from 220m to 570m. The estate is densily planted and produces very limited yields. Grapes are top quality making full-bodied wines with structure, balance and freshness.

Platinum Medal - Delicate and youthful nose of pure crunchy red cherry, vanilla framed by herbal and leathery notes. Lovely brambly palate with a vibrant acidity and blood oranges character. Long, mineral finish.

Robert Parker | 94+

This wine made from a vineyard that is planted to 36 experimental biotypes of Sangiovese is always fascinating. The Mazzei 2018 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Vicoregio 36 does not stray too far from the Sangiovese playlist, no matter which clone leads the blend, with bright cherry and fresh acidity. It shows terrific varietal purity thanks to blue flowers, wild herbs and soft earthy sensations. Despite its delicate bouquet, this wine offers good structure with fully integrated tannins.

James Suckling | 94

There’s sweetness of fruit and finesse to this, giving a creamy texture and plenty of cherry, berry, and rose-water character. It’s medium-to full-bodied with integrated tannins that are soft and creamy. Succulent finish. A little tight at the end, but will open nicely in a year or two. Best from 2023.
