Tasting notes:

Sourced from very low-yielding vines, barrel fermented with a small proportion of Grüner Veltliner skins and bottled without filtration. Aromas of forest fruits with notes of freshly cracked black pepper, crushed violets and savoury oak. Complex and textured with fine-grained tannins well-balanced with a vibrant acidity.

Producer description:

Blank Canvas is a collaboration between Master of Wine Sophie Parker-Thomson and award-winning winemaking consultant Matt Thomson. Together, they seek out exceptional single vineyards to craft small batches of wines which are now at the forefront of New Zealand’s fine wine scene. Their wines are terroir-driven and highlight the nuances between Marlborough’s diverse subregions. They also make some a cool-climate expression of Syrah in Hawkes Bay’s Gimblett Gravels.

Deepest crimson. Wildly peppery aroma with the fabulous perfume that I associate with the northern Rhône, all stony dark fruit and peonies. Just very slightly and attractively reductive, as top-notch Syrah tends to be. This is stunning: the best Blank Canvas Syrah I have tasted and likely to age well into serious complexity. It is deep but not at all sweet-fruited, dark-fruited, savoury, tarry, complex and has immense length. Just shows how well Syrah is suited to this region of NZ.
