Tasting notes:

This wine is dedicated to Philip Mazzei (1730-1816), an illustrious ancestor of the family, political thinker, American Patriot and pioneer, together with Thomas Jefferson, of the viticulture in Virginia. Aged 18 months in oak barrels. Aromatic complexity on the nose. Powerful and elegant on the palate. Full-bodied and ripe with a long and mineral finish. Great with game stews, aged and blue cheese, spicy food.

Producer description:

Fonterutoli is located near Siena on hills facing the Val d’Elsa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, Castello Fonterutoli promotes local varieties which express the identity of their land, while respecting nature and its diversity. The vineyards spread over 110 hectares divided on 144 single parcels with altitudes ranging from 220m to 570m. The estate is densily planted and produces very limited yields. Grapes are top quality making full-bodied wines with structure, balance and freshness.

This is aromatic with blueberries and black cherries, as well as hints of blue flowers, spices, dark chocolate and crushed stones. Full-bodied with layers of firm, fine-grained tannins and deep blue fruit. Structured and focused with a lingering finish that continues to build. Well crafted. Better after 2025.
