Tasting notes:

Barbe Rac is a single vineyard sourced from 90 years old vines. Fermented in concrete tanks and aged for 16 months in vats (no oak). Aromas of cherry, red berry fruits with notes of dried herbs, spice and chocolate. Ample, fleshy and round on the palate with an impressive length. It will last for 30 to 60 years depending on the vintage.

Producer description:

Maison Chapoutier is located in the Rhone valley and was founded in 1808. However, the estate really started to gain famed under Michel Chapoutier. A unique man with a thirst for knowledge, open minded and always willing to learn, Michel seeks to discover and reflect the full potential of his terroirs and let the soils express their true character. This gives the wines their signature style, which has become the basis of Maison Chapoutier. They now also own vineyards in the Roussillon, Australia and Portugal.

A terrific success given the challenges of the vintage, Chapoutier's 2021 Chateauneuf du Pape Barbe Rac—all Grenache, made without any oak—showcases cherries and raspberries, a delicate, silky feel and decent length and concentration. Fruit-forward and elegant, it's definitely one 2021 not to turn up your nose at—just don't expect to age it for more than about a decade.

A remarkable 2021 Chateauneuf with fantastic balance between creamy richness and mineral freshness that enables it to feel way lighter than this full-bodied wine really is. Deep red fruit and subtle spice fill out the ample and well-structured palate, the fine tannins building very nicely at the long, complete finish. From the extreme west of Chateauneuf, where it grows on the galets-cobblestone soil. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
