Tasting notes:

Their riserva celebrates Mazzei’s notable ancestor, Ser Lapo, author of the first official document mentioning Chianti as a wine production area in 1398. Aged ofr 12 months in French oak barrels. Fresh and structured, with aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, smoke and earth. Deep and complex on the palate with smooth tannins, it will cellar for a decade or more. This is a sophisticated Chianti and a benchmark for the appellation.

Producer description:

Fonterutoli is located near Siena on hills facing the Val d’Elsa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, Castello Fonterutoli promotes local varieties which express the identity of their land, while respecting nature and its diversity. The vineyards spread over 110 hectares divided on 144 single parcels with altitudes ranging from 220m to 570m. The estate is densily planted and produces very limited yields. Grapes are top quality making full-bodied wines with structure, balance and freshness.

The Mazzei 2021 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo is almost all Sangiovese with a 10% drop of Merlot that gives considerably more texture and richness to the mouthfeel. This mid-weight red is packed with blueberry and plum, and it shows mild spice to close. It has the inner stuffing to pair with a classic chicken roast with twice-baked potatoes or something universally appetizing. Production is an ample 290,000 bottles.

A solid, well-shaped, focused and vibrant riserva with aromas of wild currants, Morello cherries, warm herbs and baking spices. It’s medium-bodied with fine, firm tannins, yet it has so much intensity and drive. Structured and balanced, with great energy at the center. Succulent and agile, with a lively core of juicy forest berries mingling with the dried herbs and funneling toward the focused, medium finish. Try from 2026.
