Their blend is barrel fermented and aged for 15 months in 100-year-old foudre. Complex with aromas of plum, blackberry, cassis and redcurrant jam, with notes of ash and pepper. Deep and juicy with concentrated fruit on the palate balanced with plush tannins and a hint of chalk. It will keep for 20 years from the vintage.
Producer description:
Adrianna Catena, daughter of Nicolas Catena, and Catena Zapata’s head winemaker Alejandro Vigil founded this winery in 2010. Located in Luján de Cuyo, the vineyards are at an altitude between 900 and 1,500m above the sea. They first focussed on growing Cabernet Franc, atypical for the region, and named of the winery ‘El Enemigo’ which means the enemy. Their efforts were rewarded with both the 2013 and 2019 Gran Enemigo Gualtallary receiving the perfect 100 points in Robert Parker's Wine Advocate.

Blending 50% Malbec, 30% Cabernet Franc, 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Merlot, the 2021 Red Blend Gran Enemigo is one of winemaker Alejandro Vigil's favorite vintages, a testament to the site, conditions, and his winemaking skill. The grapes are grown in calcareous, rocky soil at high elevation, of course, and aged over one year in ancient foudres. The wine is so fresh, yet complex and beguiling in layers of black fruit, distinctions of dried herb, and the structure to age another 20 years.

The 2021 Gran Enemigo Tinto Mendocino, a Corte Mendocino, combines grapes from multiple Mendoza regions—Gualtallary in the Uco Valley and Agrelo in Luján de Cuyo—creating a captivating balance of ripeness and freshness. Based on 50% Malbec, with smaller portions of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it displays a garnet color with a purple tint. Its aromas span from plum and blackberry to cassis and redcurrant jam, accented by notes of ash and pepper. It is dry, juicy and compact on the palate, with plush tannins and a hint of chalk that enhances its structure. With substantial depth, it retains a gentle flow and graceful flavor.
