Tasting notes:

Inspired by Bin 707, this wine is approchable in its youth. Aged for 12 months in French and American oak (25% new). Aromas of redcurrant and plum with hints of vanilla. Medium to full-bodied, deep and structured with polished tannins well-balanced by a lively acidity.

Producer description:

Dating back to 1844, Penfold was founded by Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold who established their vineyard at Magill Estate. Within a few years, the winery became the largest in South Australia but it was only in the 1960s that it achieved international success with the release of what is now one of the world’s most celebrated Australian wines: Grange.

The core is undeniably sweet/rich yet sophisticated. The wine opens expansively — firm in structure yet big and glossy on approach. Tannins are remarkably balanced; they assert their presence without detracting from the lush blackcurrant fruit at its heart. Freshness is maintained through lively acidity, contributing greatly to the wine’s depth and length. Well-integrated oak underpins these flavours without overwhelming them — focussed and enhancing rather than competing with the fruit profile.
