Tasting notes:

One of the six expression of Nerello Mascalese which are sourced from 70-100 years old vines on terroirs with various lava flow, aspect, and altitude. Aged for 18 months in large neutral oak barrels. Contrada G (or Cru G which stands for Guardiola) sits at 800 and 1,000m above sea level, on the edge of the lava flow from Etna’s 1947 eruption. It produces a deep and complex wines with rich red berry fruit.

Producer description:

Passopisciaro is considered one of Sicily’s top estates. In the year 2000, after being tipped by a friend, pioneer winemaker Andrea Franchetti visited the northern slope of Mount Etna to explore some neglected ancient vineyards. He saw great potential in the elevated terraces sitting on lava soils planted with Nerello Mascalese. Andrea focussed on making single-vineyard wines and aimed to pave the way towards a cru system in the area. Today, his son Benjamin continues his vision. All wines are biodynamic.

Critic Scores

Kerin O'Keefe | 96

Vinous aromas recalling crushed red cherry, mingle with eucalyptus, lavender, juniper and spice. On the elegantly structured palate, savory almost salty notes accompany juicy strawberry, raspberry, star anise, cinnamon and blood orange. Taut, refined tannins provide support while bright acidity keeps it racy and balanced. Abv: 14.5%

Decanter | 95

Contrada Guardiola lies at around 800 metres just down the road from Rampante, and it gives a rounder, fuller, more generous expression of Nerello Mascalese. Fragrant lavender and herb aromas with red berry notes introduce a tightly tannic palate with underlying forest berries and creamy notes. Supporting acidity balances the weight of the tannins and extends the long, fresh finish.

James Suckling | 96

Earthy strawberries, dried flowers and soft spices on the nose. On the palate the wine is crunchy, with a medium body and crisp acidity. The tight, firm tannins are still youthful in the finish. Drinkable now, but will improve in complexity with aging.
