One of the six expression of Nerello Mascalese which are sourced from 70-100 years old vines on terroirs with various lava flow, aspect, and altitude. Aged for 18 months in large neutral oak barrels. Contrada S (or Cru S which stands for Sciaranuova) is located at 850m above sea level on a lava flow from the 1600s that has turned into thick gravel. The wines are bright, aromatic with notes of hay. Only 2,000 bottles are produced.
Producer description:
Passopisciaro is considered one of Sicily’s top estates. In the year 2000, after being tipped by a friend, pioneer winemaker Andrea Franchetti visited the northern slope of Mount Etna to explore some neglected ancient vineyards. He saw great potential in the elevated terraces sitting on lava soils planted with Nerello Mascalese. Andrea focussed on making single-vineyard wines and aimed to pave the way towards a cru system in the area. Today, his son Benjamin continues his vision. All wines are biodynamic.

Always one of the most fragrant of the estate’s single-vineyard reds, the stunning 2022 Contrada S boasts intense scents of blue flower, field flower, eucalyptus, dark spice, wet slate and dried aromatic herb. From grapes grown in Sciaranuova 850m above sea level, it has a salty mineral-driven character that underpins wild strawberry, tart cherry, herbal and spice sensations. Taut, polished tannins and bright acidity provide support and balance. What a beauty. Drink 2027–2034. Abv: 14.5%

A complex nose of almost vermouth-like aromas, dried cherries, cinnamon, oak bark, rich black cherries and hints of smoke. Firm tannin and acidity with a full body, a tight-knit finish and restrained toastiness in the aftertaste. Drinkable now, but best from 2028.
