Monica Larner 98/100
A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, the Fattoria Le Pupille 2023 Saffredi represents a classic expression from a fresh vintage that ultimately performed far better than expected despite mid-season mildew pressure. The estate continues to refine its use of wood to emphasize brightness and fruit purity, a shift that is especially evident here. The wine shows notes of dark cherry, ripe blackberry, spice and hints of creamy chocolate. While the 2022 vintage emphasized harder tannins, this vintage is defined by generosity and luscious fruit. The Cabernet Sauvignon in particular appears crunchy, youthful and fresh, giving the wine energy and forward momentum.

Tasting notes:

A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. It is born on the southern coast of Tuscany, in Pereta, just twenty minutes from the sea. Two vineyards, four parcels, two complementary soil types. The historic core of the estate consists of three parcels known as “Saffredi”, characterized by sandy soils low in organic matter. A second 12‑hectare plot also hosts the Petit Verdot, with vines rooted in tuff‑rich soils streaked with red clay. The west/northwest‑facing rows enjoy sunsets over the sea and the salty breeze rising from the coast. Altitudes reaching up to 280 meters ensure surprisingly cool nights. After meticulous selection in the vineyard and in the cellar, Saffredi matures for 18 months in French oak barriques and refines for up to 6 months in bottle before release.

Producer description:

Fattoria Le Pupille is a Morellino di Scansano estate, run by the charismatic Elisabetta Geppetti who abandoned the university halls for the vineyards and the winery in the 1980s. Along with Antinori’s legendary winemaker, the late Giacomo Tachis (creator of Sassicaia, Tignanello and Solaia, to name just three) and Elisabetta’s mentor, Fredi, Elisabetta embarked on a process of renewal and innovation at Le Pupille which led to the creation of Saffredi, to stand alongside their Morellino di Scansano and Morellino di Scansano Riserva. First created in 1987, the blend has varied over the years, but a perfect balance of the classic Bordeaux grape varieties has now been set and the wine is made from 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 10% Petit Verdot, aged for 18 months in French oak barriques, 75% of which are new. Fattoria Le Pupille has been boosted by the appointment of Luca D'Attoma as consultant in recent years.
