Tasting notes:

Made with 100% Chardonnay sourced from steep terraces between 850 and 1,000 meters in the Contrada (or cru) of Guardiola, in very loose, deep, powder-like lava that is high in minerals. The wine went through the malolactic fermentation and was aged on the lees in a mix of concrete tanks and large oak barrels. Aromas of white flowers, citrus fruit and notes of wet stone and savoury herbs. Rich and fresh on the palate with a creamy texture.

Producer description:

Passopisciaro is considered one of Sicily’s top estates. In the year 2000, after being tipped by a friend, pioneer winemaker Andrea Franchetti visited the northern slope of Mount Etna to explore some neglected ancient vineyards. He saw great potential in the elevated terraces sitting on lava soils planted with Nerello Mascalese. Andrea focussed on making single-vineyard wines and aimed to pave the way towards a cru system in the area. Today, his son Benjamin continues his vision. All wines are biodynamic.

Made with Chardonnay grown 850–1,000m above sea level, the elegant 2022 Passobianco offers delicate aromas of summer orchard fruit, fresh hay and yellow wild flower. On the bright, polished palate, tangy saline notes and beeswax accompany mature yellow apple and hazelnut. To maintain freshness during the warm, dry season, the wine was aged on its fine lees partly in concrete tanks and partly in large casks with no battonage. Drink through 2029. Abv: 13%

Made with 100% Chardonnay, the Passopisciaro 2022 Passobianco (with 46,000 bottles produced) starts off in stainless steel but then sees 10 months in a combination of oak and concrete. The vines are 21-years-old planted in a double guyot with high-density spacing (measuring 12,300 vines per hectare). This site sits at a chilly elevation of 850 to 1,000 meters above sea level. This very pretty wine goes down smoothly with a medium texture and well-shaped aromas of honey, apricot, quince and almond nougat. This is a special expression of Chardonnay from volcanic soils.
