We think that wine is first and foremost an experience not an asset. We organise regular events at Petersham Cellars to make sure our members get to experience great wines. But many wine lovers like to feel they are paying fair value for a wine, and not being taken for a ride, even if they are not investing and are unlikely to sell any of their treasured collection. There has been a lot of flux in wine market pricing over the last few years.
A short recap on 2024
2024 was a tough year for the wine market overall but among the doom & gloom our friends in Tuscany be more optimistic based on several reports from @Liv-Ex.
In 2024 "The Italy 100 and Sauternes 50 were the top performers annually"
Also in the recently-ish Liv-Ex Power 100 Brands report for 2024, arguably the biggest regional winner was Italy. 10 different Italian brands broke into the top 100 in 2024. Mostly they were Tuscan.
We are one of the leading Italian wine retailers in the UK. It makes up the majority of our list. We are proud of our strong links to Tuscany and glad that these wines are getting more of the recognition that they deserve. Helped by the incredible 2021 vintage for Super Tuscans and 2019 for Brunello, we saw continued strong demand for Tignanello (no surprise there) but also Concerto, Casanova di Neri among others..
But January is about looking forward..
In general Tuscan wine pricing hasn't got as 'overheated' as Bordeaux, Burgundy and Champagne in recent years. There is still a lot of great value even among top producers to be found. There is also a lot of energy and dynamism across the region.
Chianti Classico's new UGAs, (initially for the Gran Selezione category) and a big debate in Montalcino about the value of sub zones; are two of many examples. They show these historic regions are full of exciting dynamism, that is being reflected in the wines on offer.
After a few tastings myself in Tuscany in November, I am personally very excited about discovering more Chianti Classico Gran Selezione 2021s as they hit the market this year.
This year we are looking forward to opening more bottles with more clients from more great producers. If you are Tuscan-curious or have a Tuscan-size whole in your collection get in touch.
