Tasting notes:

Sourced from a small parcel of just 0.73ha on the northeast the Piedra Infinita vineyard where the limestone and gravel soils are covered with rocks, hence the name Gravascal (Gravas Calcáreas). Fermented in concrete tanks with native yeasts and aged in used 500l old oak barrels. Dark berry fruits and violets. The palate is precise with a chalky minerality and polished tannins and a very long finish.

Producer description:

Since the first vines were planted in 1963, The Zuccardi family has become a leader in Argentina’s wine industry. For three generations, they have been focussing on producing terroir-driven wines in Mendoza’s Uco Valley. Piedra Infinita is their most exquisite vineyard sitting 1,100 metres above the sea in the IG Paraje Altamira. Here, they produce three stunning single vineyards wines - Piedra Infinita, Supercal and Gravascal - which have been critically acclaimed. They also produce some exquisite Chardonnays in the Paraje Region.

What a nose! Complex and brooding, yet subtle and layered. The array of aromas range from scented violets and blueberries to dried herbs and minerals. Full-bodied with racy dark cherries and blueberries on the palate. Incredibly zingy and fresh, coated by a plethora of fine, polished tannins that dissipate into the fruit. That said, this is quite assertive. Chalky finish. Long and intellectual. A little more expressive than the powerful Supercal. Drinkable now, but it will reward patience over the next decade.
