Tasting notes:

Aged for 12 months in oak barrels (20% new) and a further 8 months in bottle. Aromas of red dark berry with hints of forest floor and earth. Medium-bodied, generously fruity and precise on the palate with a velvety feel and a good tension on the finish.

Producer description:

This small estate is famous for its South Tyrolean Pinot Noir. In 1986 the Gottardi family, originally from Innsbruck but with roots in Trentino, bought a piece of land in the Mazzon hill. They are dedicated to produce one of the best expressions of Pinot Noir grown in the 'Mazzon Cru'. Their wines have become a benchmark in the region and were quoted as 'Italy's Top Pinot Nero' in Decanter. They give red Burgundies a run for their money.

Critic Scores

Decanter | 93

A plump and stylish red with ripe red berry fruit flavours and good acidity. Mazzon, lying across the river Adige from Cortaccia, faces due west and is the region’s most prized area for Pinot Nero. Shaded in the morning, the Gottardi vineyards benefit from the afternoon sun and cool nighttime temperatures to maintain an even ripening process. Whole-bunch fermentation and ageing for 12 months in French oak.

A classic and complex pinot noir. The nose is dominated by boiled beets, earth, strawberries, pressed flowers and orange peel with hints of peonies, leather and minerals. Firm on the palate, with a full body, refreshing acidity, ripe tannins and a chalky finish. Drink now.
