Tasting notes:

Thanks to the soil rocky and calcareous and to the dry climate, the Syrah grape expresses itself beautifully in Sicily, and in particular at Zisola, where the "alberello" (bushy vines) training system allows the natural exuberance of the varietal to be kept uinder control. Aged for 16 months in small french oak barrels (225 lt / 50% new). Elegant on the nose with aromas of black cherry and plum alongside notes of leaves, spice and forest floor. Rich, full-bodied with smooth tannins and a long finish. It will pair well with a grilled steak, BBQ dishes , Porcini mushrooms and hard cheeses (Ragusano).

Producer description:

Located in southern Sicily, near Siracuse, Zisola is owned by the Mazzei, a Tuscan family who spans 600 years of wine expertise. When visiting the area, they saw the potential of the land and pioneered an ambitious project. Aside perfecting the making of wine from popular Grillo and Nero d’Avola, they have participated to the revival of local Catarratto grape. They also planted international varietal Syrah which is well-suited to the local climate and soil. Today the estate spreads across 50 hectares, 21 of which are dedicated to grow vines which are interspersed with olive, citrus and almond trees. Their wines are vibrant, fresh, balanced and a great introduction to what Sicily has to offer.

This 100% Syrah is very intense but also very perfumed and spicy, with a sapidity to the fruit which speaks of Noto's calcareous soils. Give it time in the bottle to evolve and you're in for a real treat. Matured for 16 months in small oak barrels.

The nose is a summer barbeque, as hot, slightly acrid aromas of smoke, tar and meat play with lighter blackberry, violet and mint undertones. On the palate, the balance between meatiness and berry sweetness continues, while imposing tannins and searing acid keep everyone in check until a swirling mocha finish.

James Suckling | 92

An attractive red with blackberries, ink and hints of chocolate. Medium body with very fine tannins and a tight, vivid palate. Extremely fine-crafted. Drink or hold.
