This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione comes from the vineyards overlooked by the small Romanic parish known as "Badiòla", in Radda, the highest plot in Chianti with an altitude of 570 meters. Due to its southeast and southwest exposition, the climate is fresher with the lowest daily temperatures of the estate combined with shist and sandstone soils. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (30% new), Badiola is a chianti with great elegance and freshness revealing lovely wild berry fruits. A firm, silky wine with cherries, berries and chocolate. Medium-bodied, fresh and firm. Racy and fine. Tannic. This needs time to open and come together.

My top pick from Mazzei’s 2020 Gran Selezione lineup, Badiòla seems to have benefited from the generous warmth of the vintage. It still unequivocally expresses its cool 570-metre climes in the UGA of Radda with its lightweight, sinewy flow. But there's sneaky stuffing and concentration to cushion the steely backbone. Mocha inflections allude to refining in small French oak tonneaux, but there's a lighter touch with the wood here. Very pretty, pure raspberry, blood orange and floral notes ring out. Positively crisp in acidity.

This expressive red exhibits cherry, raspberry and floral aromas and flavors, with a beam of vibrant acidity and refined tannins for support. Intense and resonant on the mineral-tinged aftertaste. Best from 2025 through 2036

With fruit from high-elevation vineyards in Radda in Chianti at 570 meters above sea level with sandstone and schistic galestro soils, the Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiòla shows tension and linearity over a full-bodied Sangiovese finish. The aromas in this pretty wine veer toward wild berry and blackberry with crushed stone and peat moss. There is a delicate floral note as well. The wine closes with excellent structure and freshness. This still needs time in the bottle. Production is 6,200 bottles.
