Tasting notes:

Their riserva celebrates Mazzei’s notable ancestor, Ser Lapo, author of the first official document mentioning Chianti as a wine production area in 1398. Aged ofr 12 months in French oak barrels. Fresh and structured, with aromas of dark cherry, blackberry, smoke and earth. Deep and complex on the palate with smooth tannins, it will cellar for a decade or more. This is a sophisticated Chianti and a benchmark for the appellation.

Producer description:

Fonterutoli is located near Siena on hills facing the Val d’Elsa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, Castello Fonterutoli promotes local varieties which express the identity of their land, while respecting nature and its diversity. The vineyards spread over 110 hectares divided on 144 single parcels with altitudes ranging from 220m to 570m. The estate is densily planted and produces very limited yields. Grapes are top quality making full-bodied wines with structure, balance and freshness.

The Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo shows blackberry, blackcurrant and a savory note of toasted spice. This is a more elaborate, hot-vintage expression with extra heft and pulp. Sangiovese is blended with 10% Merlot and aged in barrel for 12 months. You can up the food-pairing possibilities with this bottle to include wild boar or stewed rabbit, thanks to the wine's generous, mid-weight texture. Production is 260,000 bottles.

Notes of glazed cherries and ripe raspberries with candied orange peel, red licorice and hints of violets. Medium- to full-bodied with chocolaty texture and firm, but polished tannins. Shows depth and richness to its fruit. Compact and lengthy. Chalky finish. Drink or hold.
