Tasting notes:

Sourced from a small plot of just 0.78ha from the west side of the Piedra Infinita vineyard, which has a unique alluvial and limestone soils covered with rocks, hence the name Supercal (Super Calcáreas). Fermented in concrete tanks with native yeasts and aged in used 500l old oak barrels. Complex aromas of red fruit with mineral and earthy notes and hints of walnut. Rich on the palate with a chalky minerality, firm tannins and a juicy finish.

Producer description:

As its name suggests, the 0.95-hectare Supercal vineyard has a high concentration of calcium carbonate. Fermented with 80% whole bunches in concrete tanks, it’s another triumphant single parcel wine from a winery that is defiantly pushing boundaries in the Uco Valley. Racy, sappy and stony, this has salty minerality, chiselled acidity, bramble, fig and blueberry flavours and top notes of thyme and tobacco leaf

The 2020 Malbec Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal hails from a small plot in the eponymous, chalk-rich vineyard in Paraje Altamira. Purple in hue. The austere nose features notes of violet, sage and mint over a layer of sour cherry. Dry, restrained and very chalky on the palate, the taut, juicy flow and vibrant, compact mouthfeel lead to an intense, saline-lasting finish. The 2020 is a nuanced, primary red crafted precisely to mitigate the effects of the warm year

The grapes for the 2020 Finca Piedra Infinita Supercal were the first to be picked from the Piedra Infinita vineyard in the warm 2020 vintage, and the wine is built more around the fruit. It is juicy and pure and has similar levels of alcohol and acidity/freshness as the 2019, but of the two vintages, which I tasted side by side, this feels gentler and rounder. It has complexity despite its young age and has notes of orange peel, iron and blood, with the fine limestone sensation. The vintages are always very marked in this wine because the soil is very extreme and shallow and the vines can suffer in dry and warm conditions. 1,450 bottles were filled in June 2021

A very young, beautiful malbec that is still a bit reductive now. Fresh herbs, white pepper, violets, iron and some ripe black cherries to the nose. Full-bodied on the palate with plenty of powerful, fine tannins. Mineral and super fine-grained. Needs time. Better after 2026
