Tasting notes:

Grapes are sourced from Rocche and Munie in Monforte d’Alba, Bussia, on sandstone, marl, muddy and chalky soils. Fermented with indigenous yeasts without using sulfites and aged for at least 18 months in small oak barrels in contact with the lees to add texture to the wine. Rich on the nose with red berry fruit, rose petals and hints of earth, spice and mint. Full-bodied, structured and concentrated with silky tannins this is a thoroughbred style of Barolo.

Producer description:

The Parusso family story is one of passion and a constant desire to improve through experimentation. Their dedication to craft their wines has driven them to rediscover knowledge, traditions, and the ancient vineyard arts of their ancestors. It all started in 1901, when Gaspare Parusso purchased the first family plot, Mariondino. 120 years on, they have evolved from farmers to vintners and now own 28 hectares of vines. One of Barolo’s rising stars, Parusso is known for making approachable and age worthy Nebbiolos and are now competing with the best.

The 2021 Barolo Bussia is a dense, potent wine. A blast of dark fruit makes a strong opening statement. New leather, licorice, mocha and dried flowers are all seamless in the glass. This virile young Barolo needs considerable time, as the tannins underneath all of that fruit are pretty insistent. Historically, the Parusso Barolos have aged quite well. I expect that to be the case here.
