Tasting notes:

This Chianti Classico Gran Selezione comes from the vineyards overlooked by the small Romanic parish known as "Badiòla", in Radda, the highest plot in Chianti with an altitude of 570 meters. Due to its southeast and southwest exposition, the climate is fresher with the lowest daily temperatures of the estate combined with shist and sandstone soils. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels (30% new), Badiola is a chianti with great elegance and freshness revealing lovely wild berry fruits. A firm, silky wine with cherries, berries and chocolate. Medium-bodied, fresh and firm. Racy and fine. Tannic. This needs time to open and come together.

Producer description:

Fonterutoli is located near Siena on hills facing the Val d’Elsa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, Castello Fonterutoli promotes local varieties which express the identity of their land, while respecting nature and its diversity. The vineyards spread over 110 hectares divided on 144 single parcels with altitudes ranging from 220m to 570m. The estate is densily planted and produces very limited yields. Grapes are top quality making full-bodied wines with structure, balance and freshness.

The 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiola is one of the very finest wines I have ever tasted from Fonterutoli in a long time, maybe ever. Deep and layered in the glass, the 2021 offers a striking combination of Radda energy and a bit more textural richness than most years

The Mazzei family has one vineyard in the village of Radda, where temperatures tend to be a few degrees cooler on average. The 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Radda Badiòla (now showing the UGA subzone Radda on the front label) definitely shows a more tart flavor profile with more pronounced acidity, as you would expect. Those bright high tones, that also come thanks to a mix of schistous galestro and sandstone soils, will appeal to Sangiovese purists. Production is 10,100 bottles this vintage.

Ruby with hints of garnet color. It’s very aromatic, with fresh flowers, orange peel and cherries. Medium-bodied with velvety, polished tannins that build on the palate. Quite chewy at the end. Mineral and stone undertones. Best after 2027.
