Tasting notes:

The real "Château" of the Fonterutoli estate, it represents the essence of the land. Sourced from the 11 best vineyard plots located in Castellina in Chianti. Here, the vines catch the heat rising from the Val d'Elsa valley and are colled down at night by the breezes coming from the surrounding woods. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (50% new) and 4 months in concrete tanks. Finely aromatic with cherries, cedar, plums, spice and dried herbs. Excellent structure with smooth tannins on the palate. Bold and classy. It will keep for 20 years.

Producer description:

Fonterutoli is located near Siena on hills facing the Val d’Elsa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, Castello Fonterutoli promotes local varieties which express the identity of their land, while respecting nature and its diversity. The vineyards spread over 110 hectares divided on 144 single parcels with altitudes ranging from 220m to 570m. The estate is densily planted and produces very limited yields. Grapes are top quality making full-bodied wines with structure, balance and freshness.

Made with vines closest to the winery headquarters in the village of Castellina (spanning six clones and eight massal selections of Sangiovese), the Mazzei 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castellina Castello Fonterutoli stands somewhere between the broad, warm appeal of Castelnuovo Berardenga and the more acidic wines from Radda. This happy middle ground is characterized by mid-weight texture and very bright cherry aromas that are especially easy to identify. There is a hint of crushed stone that frames the generous fruit in this 47,000-bottle release.

Really beautiful aromas of violets, berries, sandalwood and cherries. It’s medium-bodied with round and polished tannins that run the length of the wine and show lovely finesse and focus. Juicy at the end. Needs two or three years to open and show what it has. Drink after 2026.
