Tasting notes:

Castelnuovo Berardenga benefits from a good sun exposure. This is a true experimental vineyard where the 36 biotypes of Sangiovese are planted located at 350m high on a plateau that benefit from a wide diurnal temperature range combined with a mix of chalk, clay and limestone soils. Aged for 18 months in French oak barrels (50% new). Extremely elegant, fresh with red berry aromas, extraordinarily complex and persistent with good tannic structure. A pure-bred Chianti Classico Gran Selezione. Food pairing: Spiced roast meats, stewed game, aged cheeses, mushrooms and truffles.

Producer description:

Fonterutoli is located near Siena on hills facing the Val d’Elsa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, Castello Fonterutoli promotes local varieties which express the identity of their land, while respecting nature and its diversity. The vineyards spread over 110 hectares divided on 144 single parcels with altitudes ranging from 220m to 570m. The estate is densily planted and produces very limited yields. Grapes are top quality making full-bodied wines with structure, balance and freshness.

Now showing the Castelnuovo Berardenga UGA designation on the front label, the Mazzei 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castelnuovo Berardenga Castello di Fonterutoli Vicoregio 36 is a special project made with fruit from an experimental vineyard located in a warm subzone of the appellation with, generally speaking, thicker soils and more organic matter. These conditions give rise to a wine that is rich in concentration, dark fruit flavors and oak spice. The tannins are soft, and the wine is texturally rich for a Sangiovese. The style is contemporary for sure in this 13,200-bottle release.

The black cherry and plum aromas with hints of toasted oak and cedar are very attractive on the nose. Some dried flowers. Full-bodied with fine tannins and a powerful palate of al dente fruit, including cherry, citrus and mineral character. Chewy and structured yet fresh and crunchy. This is a well-structured Chianti Classico that needs at least three or four years to come together, but will improve with age for years ahead.
