Tasting notes:

Sourced from the same 114 parcels used to produce Fonterutoli’s top range Gran Selezione, Chianti Classico is the flagship estate. Made with 90% Sangiovese, 5% Malvasia Nera and 5% Colorino and aged for 12 months in small French oak barrels and has an ageing potential of 10 years. Aromas of violet, dark and red berry fruit and hints of chocolate. Medium-bodied and elegant with a solid core of fruit and firm tannins. Will pair well with dark sauce pastas, BBQ, boiled meats with spicy sauces, aged cold cuts.

Producer description:

Fonterutoli is located near Siena on hills facing the Val d’Elsa, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Owned by the Mazzei family since 1435, Castello Fonterutoli promotes local varieties which express the identity of their land, while respecting nature and its diversity. The vineyards spread over 110 hectares divided on 144 single parcels with altitudes ranging from 220m to 570m. The estate is densily planted and produces very limited yields. Grapes are top quality making full-bodied wines with structure, balance and freshness.

The 2022 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli is a gorgeous, elegant wine – one of the best 2022s I tasted for this report. Silky, layered and super-expressive, it’s al class form start to finish. The ripeness of the year is evident, but the 2022 retains a good bit of freshness to play off its avert dark red/purplish fruit. This is impeccably rendered.

Always a solid choice on any trattoria wine list, the Mazzei 2022 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli offers fresh cherry and blueberry along with varietal tones of sweet earth and iris root. The wine is 90% Sangiovese with smaller parts of Malvasia Nera and Colorino. It goes through a quick 12 months in oak. This mid-weight red shows good intensity and silky tannins. The wine is easily accessible with 220,000 bottles made.

James Suckling | 93

A lively, succulent and composed Chianti Classico showing aromas of forest berries, dried flowers, thyme and warm spices with some dry clay. It’s medium-bodied with fine tannins and fresh acidity. Bright and agile, with a vivid center palate and a tactile, driven finish. Drink or hold.
