Tasting notes:

One of the six expression of Nerello Mascalese which are sourced from 70-100 years old vines on terroirs with various lava flow, aspect, and altitude. Aged for 18 months in large neutral oak barrels. Contrada C (or Cru C which stands for Chiappemacine) is their lowest single vineyard cru at 550m above sea level. It is fuller and rounder because it lies on the last outreach of Mount Etna’s lava; where the thinner strata of lava lies above a limestone bed which the vines penetrate.

Producer description:

Passopisciaro is considered one of Sicily’s top estates. In the year 2000, after being tipped by a friend, pioneer winemaker Andrea Franchetti visited the northern slope of Mount Etna to explore some neglected ancient vineyards. He saw great potential in the elevated terraces sitting on lava soils planted with Nerello Mascalese. Andrea focussed on making single-vineyard wines and aimed to pave the way towards a cru system in the area. Today, his son Benjamin continues his vision. All wines are biodynamic.

Aromas of ripe dark-skinned berry, eucalyptus, hay and dark spice take shape on the 2022 Contrada C. Hailing from grapes grown in the Chiappemacine contrada, the lowest site for the estate’s single-vineyard bottlings at 550m above sea level, it’s full-bodied but also boasts a weightless concentration and flair, doling out succulent Morello cherry, crushed raspberry, licorice and a hint of candied orange slice. Tightly woven, velvety tannin provide enveloping support. Drink 2026–2032. Abv: 15%

Contrada C comes from contrada Chiappemacine, at 550 metres above sea level in Passopisciaro. An intense and fleshy core of ripe cherry and strawberry is supported by good acidity with flecks of wild mint, and fine, round tannins. Generous yet poised and balanced, it's a moreish red with some floral notes on the sapid finish.
