Tasting notes:

With this 100 Catarratto, the Mazzei family continues its intention of enhancing the native vines of South Eastern Sicily, in this case through a white wine that expresses the maximum potential of Catarratto, widely spread in Sicily since very remote times. Sourced from Contrada in Noto where calcareous and mineral soils lies at 130m high. Aged on the skin in amphora (50%) and on the lees (50%). Aromas of citrus fruits with hints of minerals. Ample on the palate with a lovely freshness and hints of salinity towards the finish.

Producer description:

Located in southern Sicily, near Siracuse, Zisola is owned by the Mazzei, a Tuscan family who spans 600 years of wine expertise. When visiting the area, they saw the potential of the land and pioneered an ambitious project. Aside perfecting the making of wine from popular Grillo and Nero d’Avola, they have participated to the revival of local Catarratto grape. They also planted international varietal Syrah which is well-suited to the local climate and soil. Today the estate spreads across 50 hectares, 21 of which are dedicated to grow vines which are interspersed with olive, citrus and almond trees. Their wines are vibrant, fresh, balanced and a great introduction to what Sicily has to offer.

This is a new high-end project started by the Mazzei family just a few years ago. When this Tuscan family initially invested in Sicily, the idea was to focus solely on red wines. But the international success of this native Sicilian white grape gave them the incentive to make this wine, now the most expensive in the portfolio. The 2022 Catarratto Contrada Zisola is angular and tight with tart citrus, minty apple and chopped almond. It finishes with tension, freshness, energy and white wine tannins. The wine sees some skin maceration (about 50% of the total) for three months in cocciopesto (which is an Italian conglomerate cement-like material); the other 50% is fermented off the skins. Production is 6,000 bottles.

White peaches and crunchy apples with hints of saffron and candied orange peel. Dry and crisp with a medium body and vivid acidity. Steely and minerally at the end. Drink now.
