Tasting notes:

Sourced from ‘Vigna Lodovico', this is the prestige cuvee of the estate. Aged for 16 months in oak barrel (80% new). Intense aromas on the nose with fresh notes of ripe red fruit, alongside scents of brushwood. Full-bodied with smooth and velvety tannins. Enticing texture and luscious fruit character yet very balanced and refined and a savoury and persistent finish. Only produced in exceptional years.

Producer description:

Vigna Lodovico is a six-hectare vineyard planted exclusively to Cabernet Franc, located on the northern exposure of the historic Bellaria plot, between Bolgheri and Bibbona. While the southern part of Bellaria lies within the Bolgheri DOC and is home to Ornellaia, the northern site is dedicated to Lodovico. The two vineyards share the same soils and microclimate, differing only in exposure, which gives Vigna Lodovico its distinctive character. Lodovico identified a high percentage of clay in the soil that immediately inspired him to plant Cabernet Franc, a major difference from Bolgheri and a long-term varietal to dominate in hotter climates. Helped by old friend and successful Bordeaux oenologist Michel Rolland, Lodovico has created a new Tuscan legend and named it after himself.

When he was doing Masseto, his inspiration was Petrus, and for Lodovico it's Cheval Blanc,' states Lodovico Antinori's daughter, Sophia. This Cabernet Franc-based blend from a north-facing single vineyard in Bibbona is only made in the finest vintages – and 2021 is very fine indeed. While the 2020 tasted alongside is drinking better right now, the 2021 arguably has more in terms of potential. It seduces with its violet- and lavender-laden dark hedgerow berries and black cherry character, with a delightful red cherry finish. Lifted, vertical and saline, it's a really classy bottling with plenty of promise.

A blend of Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Petit Verdot, the Tenuta di Biserno 2021 Lodovico shows an inky and impenetrable appearance. The wine is textured and bold, with sweet tannins and lots of rich fiber wrapping thickly over the palate. There is a pretty touch of nutmeg and cinnamon that appears over the wine's finely tuned tannins. You get lots of black fruit intensity in this full-bodied Tuscan red that promises a long drinking window.
