2022 Sassicaia
Tasting notes:
The name Sassicaia means place of many stones due to the gravelly soil which is similar to the one found in the Médoc where Cabernet Sauvignon thrives. First released in 1968 as an IGT, the wine’s reputation was consolidated when Sassicaia was awarded its own DOC of Bolgheri Sassicaia in the 1990s. It is still the only Italian wine from a single estate to have a DOC of its own. Aged for 25 months in oak barrel (up to 50% new) before being transferred to stainless steel tanks for the final blending to take place. Intense on the nose with aromas of black berry fruit, blackberry jam, gravel, spice, leather and liquorice. The palate is rich and elegant with savoury fruits and fine and grippy tannins well balanced with a sharp acidity and a very long finish. Sassicaia is an opulent wine with complex, intense and precise aromas. This is a masterpiece.
Producer description:
Tenuta San Guido was born out of the ambition of Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta to plant Bordeaux varieties in Tuscany. Helped by Giacomo Tachis, Mario produced the iconic Sassicaia, the first Super Tuscan wine ever made. The wine has not only entered Italy's Wine Pantheon but also achieved ‘cult’ status amongst collectors across the globe. Two more wines are now also produced at the estate: Guidalberto and Le Difese.
