Tasting notes:

Sourced from low-yield vineyard, partly barrel fermented with malolactic fermentation taking place and aged on the lees in oak barrel. Aromas of stone and citrus fruit with hints of subtle oak. Medium to full-bodied with a creamy texture and a mineral and refreshing finish. It can be enjoyed right away but will gain complexity within 3 to 4 years from the vintage.

Producer description:

Dating back to 1844, Penfold was founded by Dr Christopher and Mary Penfold who established their vineyard at Magill Estate. Within a few years, the winery became the largest in South Australia but it was only in the 1960s that it achieved international success with the release of what is now one of the world’s most celebrated Australian wines: Grange.

The 2023 Reserve Bin A Chardonnay is aromatically tight and ungiving—far less reductive, toasty and expressive than previous releases of this great wine. Perhaps it is still suffering from its recent bottling? On the palate, this is toasty and concentrated and yet still closed. The citrus flow of flavor intersects with the tight acidity, and this reveals the Adelaide Hills origin. While there is density here, it remains structurally quite fine and firm. It matured for seven months in French barriques, 60% new and 30% one year old. It was bottled with 12.5% alcohol, a pH of 3.07 and 6.7 grams per liter of total acidity, sealed under screw cap.
