Tasting notes:
Similar in style to its elder brother, Clarence is the second wine of the estate. It has all the unique attributes of a fine wine, while reaching maturity more quickly. Known previously as Château Bahans Haut-Brion, it was renamed Le Clarence de Haut-Brion as a tribute to Clarence Dillon, who acquired the property in 1935. Aromas of fresh blackcurrant and cherry with notes of wood and spice. Full-bodied and powerful on the palate with fine tannins and excellent concentration of fruits.
Producer description:
Château Haut-Brion is the only Premier Grand Cru Classé that is not located in the Médoc but in Pessac-Leognan. Vines were planted here over 2000 years ago by the romans who could already see the benefits of the tiny quartz pebbles called “graves” (gravel) which compose the soil. The estate today spreads across 51 ha of vines with an excellent orientation and slopes ensuring natural drainage. One of the particularities at Haut Brion is to frequently rack the Grand Vin “à l’esquive” (through the small bunghole at the base of the barrel) during the maturation. This is a meticulous process that gently oxygenates the wines and forms its character.
